West of Scotland Managed Clinical Network for Cancer

Beatson Oncology Centre, GlasgowAxSys Technology Ltd is delighted to report that it has been contracted by the Scottish Telemedicine Action forum, funded by the Scottish Executive, to implement Excelicare as the clinical information and image management system to support the West of Scotland managed clinical network for cancer.

This project will involve the deployment of Excelicare in various hospitals throughout the west of Scotland. The project requires substantial interfacing to existing laboratory, radiology, PAS, chemotherapy and radiotherapy systems. In addition, Excelicare will be interfaced to CT Scanners, PACS stores and pathology microscopes in order to display clinical images utilising the advanced multi-media capabilities of Excelicare.

AxSys will utilise their interface engine, Exceliport in this project. Excelicare will be used as a clinical information and image management system. The MCN is a network of clinicians from several different sites in the West of Scotland who collaborate in the care of patients with gynaecological cancer through Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) meetings, which are conducted through video conferencing.

The Excelicare platform will be installed at the following sites allowing clinicians from these sites to access a single database:

The Beatson Oncology Centre, Glasgow Crosshouse Hospital, Kilmarnock
Crosshouse Hospital, Kilmarnock
Inverclyde Royal Hospital, Greenock
Falkirk Royal Infirmary, Falkirk
Hairmyres Hospital, East Kilbride
Wishaw General Hospital, Lanarkshire
A spokesman for the network stated:

"The West of Scotland Managed Clinical Network for Gynaecological Cancer endorse treatment decisions for patients which are based on evidence based practice discussed between Specialist Teams and multidisciplinary groups.

Hairmyres Hospital, East KilbrideAxsys Technology Ltd have appreciated fully, the clinical requirements for sharing of images and data. They have provided expert insight into the technical requirements, existing NHS IT infrastructure and provide a support team who are encouraging staff to embrace this new exciting method of working."

The project will exploit several advanced features of Excelicare that include the management of MDT conferences as well as the management of MCN staff.

In the first instance, the Excelicare platform will provide a clinical information system for the Gynaeoncology Network. Other cancer networks will be incorporated within Excelicare in a phased manner.

Inverclyde Royal Hospital, GreenockThe Gynaeoncology module has been developed using Excelicare's powerful Designer Toolkit and has resulted in a comprehensive system for the gathering of clinical data for Radiotherapy, Chemotherapy, Surgery, Investigations and Follow Up Care. Information on referrals, clinical reviews and courses of treatment are captured. This information can then be shared between all members of the MCN during MDT meetings with particular consideration paid to patient confidentiality. The system also generates summary documents and letters with patient information, as well as a range of reports for management purposes.

The project also involves integrating all of the hospitals' existing PAS and LABs systems as well as Radiology, Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy systems at certain sites.
